Energy-Intensive Packaging Meets a 120% Gas Rise

Beverage packaging decisions are usually framed around recyclability, brand presentation and unit cost. A fourth variable has become hard to ignore: the energy intensity of the material itself.

What has happened to European energy

Dutch TTF futures have climbed roughly 120% since the start of 2026, reaching about €63.7/MWh on 18 August and trading above €66 shortly after.

The winter outlook is worse. Oxford Economics is expected to raise its forecast toward an average near €60/MWh for Q4 2026 and Q1 2027, from €45/MWh currently, and some analysis suggests prices may need to exceed €100/MWh to divert flexible US LNG from Asia.

Storage is depleted, record temperatures are raising electricity demand while drought and heat curb hydro and nuclear output, and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz threaten Qatari LNG supply.

Why this reaches packaging

Glass production requires furnaces held at high temperature continuously — they cannot be switched off between orders. Primary aluminium is among the most electricity-intensive industrial processes there is.

Both are European production categories with direct exposure to the prices above. A packaging quote given in spring may not survive the winter.

What this means alongside PPWR

The timing is awkward. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation became enforceable on 12 August 2026 with no grace period, requiring that substances of concern be minimised and that packaging meet essential requirements on design for recycling and minimisation.

So producers face compliance work and input cost pressure in the same quarter. The temptation is to treat them as one problem and redesign once. That is worth resisting: the provisions that would justify a full redesign — recyclability grading from 2028, mandatory recycled content from 2030 — have not arrived.

Redesigning now against rules that are not final risks paying twice.

Practical responses

Ask suppliers about energy pass-through explicitly. A quote with a fixed validity period means something different in this market than it did last year.

Recycled content reduces energy exposure. Recycled aluminium and glass require substantially less energy than primary production — which aligns with where PPWR is heading anyway, without needing to guess the final thresholds.

Consider format weight. Lighter glass uses less material and less furnace energy. Minimisation requirements now apply regardless.

Do not switch material on price alone. Energy costs are volatile in both directions; a material change made on a six-month price signal is a long-term decision built on a short-term input.

Compliance work should proceed on the regulatory timetable. Sourcing decisions should account for a winter that looks more expensive than the one before it.
